Welcome to They Call Me Dad!  My name is Jason Dykstra and I hope you enjoy your visit.  I started this blog in 2016, though the idea for it came much earlier.  It wasn’t until my family and I experienced a devastating loss that I finally decided to add my voice to the online world of blogs.

I’ve been married since 2007 and we have four kids, three living.  My wife and I both work full-time – she’s a police officer and I’m a conflict transformation and leadership specialist.  You can imagine what our supper conversations look like.  Both of us are born and raised here in Ontario, Canada, and both of our families come from Dutch descent.

This blog is a lot of things to me.  Stories about my family, a place to sort through some of my thoughts and opinions, and a place to share my (many) screw-ups.  To a certain degree, this blog is my therapy and gives me the chance to talk about things that I wish would have existed online during our devastating blessing.  A major part of my life is my faith.  I might even talk about it from time to time here, but don’t worry, I’m not here to cram it down your throat.  However, because it is such a cornerstone of my life, I think it’s important for you to know where some of my hope and outlook on life comes from.

In my professional life, I have worked with individuals from all walks of life - developmental disabilities, mental health, at-risk youth, and transient folks. I realized early in my career that I had a deep desire to help others and knew that I wanted to eventually work for myself. So I journeyed out working for myself in the family mediation world. After a few years and hundreds of mediations later, I began to transition my company to work with organizations and churches, and that's where I find myself today. I have the privilege to walk beside workplaces and congregations as a coach, mediator, and trainer/facilitator on a daily basis.

Over the past year, I have also been working on a book that is near and dear to my heart, and I know you’re going to love it as well.  If anything here catches your attention and you’d like to chat more, please don’t hesitate to email me at sotheycallmedad@gmail.com or use the contact us form.
